Roosevelt’s Artistic Tradition Endures
Many artists continue to live and work in Roosevelt today. Several of the original artist families in Roosevelt, such as the Shahns, the Rosskams, and the Prestopinos, are continuing the legacy of the arts through subsequent generations. Meanwhile new artists, writers, and musicians are drawn to the town because of its rich tradition and its conduciveness to making art.
In 1986, Bernarda Bryson Shahn, Jacob Landau, and others founded the Roosevelt Arts Project (RAP) whose mission is to bring the work of local artists to the public and foster collaboration between them. Each year RAP presents programs featuring new works by artists who live in town through studio tours, film showings, performances of plays, music, poetry, and more.
