Make a big splash in your garden this year with cardoon! This artichoke cousin will start out small, but grow quickly in your sunny containers and gardens where it adds drama with its silvery serrated leaves, tall stature, and late summer mini ‘chokes’ with purple thistle flowers. Our variety, ‘Porto Spineless,‘ is without the prickly spines typical of the species. It was bred as a beautiful ornamental, the plant‘s erect profile and gently curving leaves support beautiful purple bristle-flowers that look great when cut and remain long lasting for dried arrangements. Cardoon plants take a while to "fruit," requiring up to 100 days. Lucky for you... these plants have a good head start, so they should bloom for you in mid-summer. Native to southern Europe, Cardoon was grown as a vegetable by the Greeks and Romans, and was brought to America by the Quakers in the 1790s. Though still edible, we suggest growing it to add visual drama to your gardens, attract bees and butterflies, add some history, and even for use in cut arrangements.
