Only for the Eye of a Friend: The Poems of Annis Boudinot Stockton
The collected poems of Annis Boudinot Stockton, one of Morven’s historical residents. Edited by Carla Mulford. 336 pages, 6" by 9".
From the introduction:
”Annis Stockon wrote in the most distinguished private and public genres of her day. Her odes, epithalamia, elegies, sonnets, epitaphs, hymns, and other poems all suit the generic categories, even as they treat peculiarly American topics like the heroes of the Revolutionary War and peculiarly personal topics… Like her English counterparts, she wrote pastorals that expressed the cultural dichotomy of country and city, sarcasm attacking closed attitudes about gender-based roles, sonnets about her love for her husband, elegies about her death. The themes she selected were common ones, and they represented common cultural concerns.”
