Join Morven’s Interim Director and Curator Beth Allan for a special evening exploring the life and work of New Jersey clockmaker, Peter Hill.
Peter Hill is the earliest documented Black clockmaker in America. It is believed that he made over one hundred tall case clocks during his lifetime, learning the craft while enslaved and then purchasing his own freedom. While developing Morven’s current exhibition, Striking Beauty: New Jersey Tall Case Clocks, 1730 - 1830, Curators Beth Allan and Jesse Gordon Simons uncovered new documents about Hill’s life. Mark the close of Striking Beauty by celebrating the little known story and beautiful craftsmanship of Peter Hill.
Striking Beauty examines the work of New Jersey clockmakers as they collaborated with cabinetmakers, ran shops, and formed professional partnerships to create beautiful timekeeping pieces. This exhibit includes over 50 tall case clocks, representing almost as many different clockmakers, from both private and public collections. The exhibition closes on Sunday, February 18, 2024.
Your ticket includes access to visit Striking Beauty from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. before the program begins. There you can view one of Peter Hill’s clocks in-person.
This event is hybrid - held both live and online. Doors open for the in-person event at 6:00 p.m. in the Stockton Education Center. The virtual waiting room opens on Zoom at 6:00 p.m. Q&A for both live and virtual attendees will follow the talk.
A Zoom webinar link will be shared with virtual ticket holders following registration. A recording of the event will be provided.
